How it scored

Scored on our fixed 5-part system — built from the consensus of field reports, video tests and hunter feedback. Each axis is an independent 0–10 score. How we score ↗

What we liked

  • One-piece all-steel construction is tough
  • Stable, dependable flight
  • No replacement blade cost, ever
  • Resharpenable so it lasts for years
  • Affordable and widely available
  • Loyal, long-time user base

Where it falls short

  • One of the dullest heads out of the package
  • Steel does not take or hold a keen edge easily
  • Tedious and frustrating to resharpen
  • Tip can deform on hard impacts (disputed)

Flight & accuracy

The Montec's symmetrical three-blade, one-piece design flies stably and predictably, and the compact 1 1/16" cut keeps it well-behaved in the wind. Flight is not its problem and most users get it tuned without drama.

Penetration

Penetration is solid thanks to the rigid one-piece body, but it is held back by the head's biggest flaw: a dull edge does not initiate cuts well. Sharpened properly the Montec drives deep; out of the box, the blunt edges blunt its potential.

Durability & edge retention

This is the Montec's calling card. The one-piece steel construction shrugs off abuse that bends lesser heads, and there are no blades to replace or screws to loosen. There are persistent, if disputed, reports of the tip deforming on very hard impacts, but most users find it holds up well. Edge retention is fine once you get an edge on it.

Blood trail

With only a 1 1/16" cut and edges that are notoriously hard to make razor-sharp, the Montec is not a blood-trail standout. A well-honed head cuts cleanly, but a factory-dull one can leave disappointing sign, which is the most common complaint from the field.

Value & who it's for

The Montec is for the patient hunter who is willing to learn to sharpen steel. The payoff is a near-permanent head with zero blade cost, but you must accept the out-of-box dullness and the work to fix it. Buyers who will not sharpen should look elsewhere.

How it compares

FAQ

Why is the G5 Montec so dull out of the box?

It is a long-standing complaint. The Montec's steel does not take a keen factory edge well, so nearly every experienced user resharpens it before hunting.

How do you sharpen a G5 Montec?

With a fine stone or a dedicated broadhead sharpener, working each of the three edges. Many users find it tedious because the steel is hard to bring to a true razor edge.

Does the G5 Montec tip bend on impact?

There are scattered reports of tip deformation on very hard impacts, but it is disputed and most users find the one-piece head holds up well.

The Striker V2's ventless ferrule makes it quiet and forgiving enough to shoot with field points, and the Lutz steel is genuinely razor-keen. Just don't expect class-leading penetration or edge retention.

G5 Montec

The Montec is durable, stable and refreshingly cheap to run since there are no replacement blades, but it is genuinely one of the dullest heads out of the box and a chore to put a good edge on.

If pinpoint flight and stack-leading penetration top your list, the Standard is hard to beat. The only compromise is a modest 1" cut that throws less blood than wide heads.
