How it scored

Scored on our fixed 5-part system — built from the consensus of field reports, video tests and hunter feedback. Each axis is an independent 0–10 score. How we score ↗

What we liked

  • Excellent field-point-like flight
  • Field reports of double-shoulder pass-throughs
  • Razor-sharp out of the package
  • Tough one-piece steel ferrule
  • Inexpensive at ~$35 per three

Where it falls short

  • Thin .025" blades can bend on heavy bone
  • Stainless edge is sharp but not tool-steel durable
  • 1 3/16" cut is solid but not wide
  • Three-blade blood is good, not dramatic

Flight & accuracy

The MX-3 is a notably good flier, planting with field points for most shooters and tracking straight thanks to its rigid ferrule. It is the kind of head you can sight in quickly and trust.

It does not quite match the Trocar's tip geometry, but in the air the two are very close and both transition cleanly from practice points.

Penetration

Penetration is the MX-3's standout, with field reports describing double-shoulder pass-throughs — a tough ask for any fixed head. The three-blade geometry and stout ferrule drive deep on bone hits.

That bone performance makes it a confident choice for big-bodied game when shots may not be perfectly broadside.

Durability & edge retention

The ferrule and overall build are durable, and the head holds together through hard impacts. The familiar caveat is the thin .025" blades, which can bend on heavy bone just like the Trocar's.

Edge retention is good for stainless and the factory edge is genuinely razor-sharp; replacement blades keep it cheap to maintain.

Blood trail

With a 1 3/16" three-blade cut and a sharp factory edge, the MX-3 leaves a reliable, easy-to-follow trail on pass-throughs. Three exit slits do consistent work even on angled shots.

It is a solid blood producer for a penetration-first head, if short of dedicated wide-cut designs.

Value & who it's for

At roughly $35 the MX-3 is one of the best bargains in the fixed-blade aisle, delivering premium-level flight and penetration for budget money.

It is ideal for hunters who want bone-busting reliability and great flight without spending big, provided they accept the thin-blade trade-off and keep spares on hand.

FAQ

Can the Muzzy MX-3 pass through a shoulder?

Field reports describe double-shoulder pass-throughs, so with adequate poundage it handles heavy bone well. Penetration is one of its strongest traits.

Do Muzzy MX-3 blades bend?

The thin .025" blades can bend on heavy bone, the same caveat as the Trocar. They are cheap to replace, so keep a few spares.

How does the Muzzy MX-3 compare to the Trocar?

They share blade thickness and cut diameter and both fly and penetrate well. The Trocar adds its signature chisel tip; the MX-3 is typically a few dollars cheaper.

Is the Muzzy MX-3 sharp out of the box?

Yes, it arrives razor-sharp and ready to hunt, one of its consistent strengths in field reviews.

Muzzy Trocar

The Trocar flies almost indistinguishably from a field point, hits scary-sharp, and the chisel tip eats bone. The only knock is thin .025" blades that can bend on ribs — but they cost pennies to replace.

Fixed Blade

QAD Exodus

The Exodus is the value benchmark of the fixed-blade world: tough thick blades, a 1 1/4" cut, and forgiving flight for around $40. Just buy the full-blade version and check your state's barbed-broadhead rules on the swept.

G5 Striker V2

The Striker V2's ventless ferrule makes it quiet and forgiving enough to shoot with field points, and the Lutz steel is genuinely razor-keen. Just don't expect class-leading penetration or edge retention.
